How to Refresh Your Home Decor for Spring
Hot tips to achieve ethnic, contemporary and spa styles
Renovating without great expense or a lot of effort is easy these days with the variety of beautiful home accents on the market. A décor refresh in your home can be as simple as changing the orientation of furniture, or a new coat of paint and accenting with a few new items. Accents can range from a new piece of furniture or rug, to a wall hanging or vase.
And new doesn't necessarily mean new off the shelf. It means new to the room. Experiment with moving furniture, art and accessories from other rooms in your home. You may negate the need to spend any money at all for a brand new look! Other inexpensive options include shopping at secondhand stores, flea markets, garage sales, or antique stores. In home décor, the adage “one man's junk is another man's treasure” rings very true!
A few basic rules should be remembered in all décor projects: - Always have a focal point – it may be a feature wall or special piece of furniture, or as small as the cushions you choose to accent your couch
- Always strive to achieve balance in an arrangement. This may be a grouping of pictures on a wall or an arrangement of ornaments. Balance is achieved through grouping pieces using a common colour theme, design style or shape
- Use mirrors to reflect light sources or prominent features in a room such as art or a fireplace
- Art should be hung 10” above furniture or 3' from the floor if the ceilings are 9' high.
- Use lamps to create soft light and ambiance
- Choose humidity resistant accents for the bathroom
- Choose practical useful accents for the bathroom to bring both functionality and design to a small space
